From a Word file to a print-ready book

Typesetting an academic book is more than placing text on a page. Heading levels, figure and table captions, footnotes, references and chapter metadata are marked up one by one, and the book is set to the press's template from that structure. The same structure is then used for DOI registration and the HTML full text.

What we typeset

Whatever the type of book or language, every job goes through the same checks.

Monographs
Books based on theses, textbooks and monographs, with long reference lists, indexes and appendices.
Edited volumes
For each chapter the authors, affiliations, ORCID iDs and abstract are set separately, with chapter metadata and DOI on the opening page.
Conference proceedings
Abstract books and full-text proceedings, with session order and author and affiliation indexes. A separate conference publishing package is also available.
Journal issues
A separate PDF for each article, issue cover and contents, ready to upload to OJS.
Tables, figures and equations
Wide tables, landscape pages, mathematical and statistical notation, and figures placed at print resolution.
Turkish and English text
Language-specific hyphenation, quotation marks and punctuation; one consistent layout for bilingual books.

How the work proceeds

Timing depends on the length of the book and the state of the files; the order is always the same.

  1. Reviewing the files

Word files, images and imprint details are reviewed; missing or conflicting information is reported to the author and editor at the outset.

  2. Working out the structure

Heading levels, abstracts, figure and table captions, footnotes and references are marked up.

  3. Page layout

The book is set to the press's trim size, typefaces and imprint layout. If there is no template, one is made for the press.

  4. Proofs and corrections

The typeset book is read page by page; a proof PDF is sent and corrections are made.

  5. Delivery

Print PDF, electronic PDF and, on request, HTML full text, EPUB3 and JATS/BITS XML.

Why typesetting and metadata go together

The structure worked out during typesetting is also the source of the metadata sent to Crossref when the book's DOIs are registered. Once chapter titles, authors, affiliations, abstracts and references are marked up correctly, the same information flows consistently into the PDF, the HTML edition and the records.

When typesetting and registration are done by different suppliers, chapter page ranges and the details in the records often drift apart. When one team does both, those differences are fixed before delivery.

Frequently asked questions

What if our press has no template?

A page template is made to fit the press's identity and is reused for later books.

Which file formats do you work from?

Authors' text usually arrives in Word; LaTeX and content in OJS or OMP are also accepted.

Can we send a sample chapter for a quote?

Yes. After sending the proposal form, email a sample chapter; the quote is based on that chapter and the total page count.

How is the price set?

Each job gets a separate written proposal. The price depends on page count, density of tables and figures, number of languages and the outputs required.

Requesting a proposal

Tell us briefly the type of book, the approximate page count and the deadline; if possible, attach a sample chapter.
