Ecosystem
A publication is as international as the network it is connected to
International academic publishing is a network of persistent identifiers, metadata standards, indexes, open access infrastructure, library catalogues, preservation services and ethics bodies. Silsile prepares the records and files each of the infrastructures below requires, according to the type of publication. Acceptance and listing are always decided by the infrastructure itself; some require a separate agreement or application by the publisher.
| Area | Infrastructure and standards | What Silsile does |
|---|---|---|
| 01Persistent identifiers |
| DOI registration at book, chapter and version level; matching authors and editors to ORCID and institutions to ROR; resolving name variants. |
| 02Metadata standards |
| Rich, multilingual metadata; reference deposit; version and correction relations; a persistent landing page for every book and chapter; machine-readable licence and contributor information. |
| 03Open access book infrastructure |
| DOAB and OAPEN delivery packages; OpenAIRE-compliant publishing; collection of usage statistics. |
| 04Indexes and citation databases |
| Index application files and the XML and metadata formats they require; pre-checks for eligibility; consistent citation styles. |
| 05Libraries, catalogues and distribution |
| Catalogue-ready MARC records and ONIX feeds; metadata files that libraries and distributors can use for cataloguing. |
| 06Legal deposit |
| Electronic deposit packages prepared to the rules of the publisher's country. |
| 07Long-term preservation |
| Regular delivery packages for preservation providers. |
| 08Ethics and trust |
| Publisher compliance profile; plagiarism check integration; retraction and correction notices. |
| 09Publishing management systems |
| Installing, maintaining, securing and theming OJS and OMP; importing content from the system and uploading finished outputs and metadata. |
| 10Research information systems |
| OAI-PMH compatible feeds to author profiles and institutional repositories. |
| 11Accessibility |
| Accessible EPUB3 and PDF/UA output; conformance statements for the European market. |
The technical side of the Think. Check. Submit. checklist
In the checklist for books and chapters, many of the items answered "no" come down to missing technical infrastructure. Silsile's services cover these items directly.
| Item | Question | What Silsile provides |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | Are the books easy to discover? | ONIX and MARC distribution, Google Scholar tags |
| 11-12 | Are the books indexed? | Index and database delivery packages |
| 13 | Is there long-term preservation? | Regular delivery to preservation providers |
| 14 | Do books and chapters get DOIs? | Book and chapter DOIs with rich Crossref metadata |
| 20 | Is licence information on every publication? | Machine-readable licence metadata and imprint |
| 25 | Is access and usage information provided? | Usage statistics reports; the COUNTER format is supported |
| 28 | Are open access books in DOAB? | DOAB package and eligibility pre-check |
Decisions on peer review, fees, copyright and conflicts of interest remain with the publisher; Silsile helps document these policies.
