Your DOIs stay registered in your name

DOIs for books, chapters, articles and conference papers are registered through your own Crossref membership, under your own prefix. We carry out the registration work; if our collaboration ends, the DOIs and the metadata stay with your press.

Whose name are the DOIs registered under?

In Crossref, a DOI belongs to the member whose prefix it uses. DOIs are therefore registered through the publisher's own membership and under its own prefix (for example 10.xxxxx/...). Silsile carries out the registration on the publisher's authority.

DOIs obtained from free repositories (for example Zenodo) stay under the repository's prefix and do not carry the publisher's name. Such records also fall outside Crossref's reference linking and citation matching services. That route suits research data and preprints; it is not recommended for books and journal articles.

How it works

  1. Membership application

We prepare the application details; the publisher approves the application and pays its fees directly to Crossref.

  2. Authorisation

The publisher asks Crossref to add Silsile as a user on its account. This access can be removed at any time.

  3. Registration

For every book, chapter, article or paper we send the DOI together with ORCID iDs of authors and editors, ROR IDs of institutions, abstracts, keywords, licence and references to Crossref.

  4. Monitoring

We follow the publisher's Crossref participation report, correct missing or wrong metadata, and add new issues and editions.

What the service covers

  • Preparing the Crossref membership application and setting up the prefix
  • DOI registration for new publications, with book and chapter metadata
  • Checking ORCID and ROR identifiers one by one
  • Complete abstracts, licences and references in every deposit

  • Corrections and updates to existing records

Our fee is quoted in writing according to the type and number of publications.

Special cases

Journals on a national or shared platform
Where a platform already registers DOIs for its journals, no separate membership is needed; we support metadata quality and HTML full text.
Conference proceedings
DOIs are registered under the membership of the organising society or institution, on the same schedule as the typesetting of the proceedings volume.

Guide: Crossref DOIs for a journal

What does membership involve?

Crossref's membership terms place ongoing obligations on every publisher that registers DOIs. Keeping up with them is part of the service.

  • Registering a DOI for everything published and sending metadata on time.
  • Not re-registering content that a previous publisher has already given a DOI.
  • Adding DOIs, where they exist, to the works cited in reference lists.
  • Making every DOI resolve to a landing page that shows the work's details and its DOI.

Frequently asked questions

What if some of our content already has DOIs through another publisher?

Existing DOIs do not change and are not registered again. Crossref allows responsibility for a journal or book series to be transferred to a new member with both parties' approval. After the transfer, the old DOIs keep their prefix, new content is registered under the new member's prefix, and the new member can update the metadata of the earlier records.

Do book chapters need their own DOIs?

It is not required. In edited volumes, however, chapters are usually read and cited one by one; a separate DOI makes a chapter easier to find and to add to the author's ORCID record. Crossref's fee for a chapter is lower than for a book.

What happens if we stop working with Silsile?

The DOIs and the prefix stay with the publisher's membership. The publisher asks Crossref to remove Silsile's user access, and the records can be maintained by another supplier or the publisher's own team.

Registering DOIs

Tell us briefly about your press, how many titles or articles you publish a year and, if you have one, your existing Crossref prefix; we will send you the process and a written proposal.
